What are Cloud Services?

A cloud service is any resource that is provided over the Internet. Generally this is broken down into three types of services:

Software as a Service (SaaS)

Instead of opting to buy, license and install software (such as Microsoft Office) you can instead opt for a subscription

Software as a Service example:

Instead of buying a license (for say Microsoft Office) in order to install and use it you could instead opt for a Microsoft Office 365 account. This would give you the same Microsoft Office but would also come with a web based version and some online storage. This makes more sense if your entire team also have Office 365 as Exchange email and collaboration space is also included. This usually saves costs as you would need to buy your own server to do this and maintain it.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

In the past, businesses have generally invested in their own server hardware (infrastucture).

This means that the hardware needed power, maintenance and support. It also required updating and patching to keep pace with security and software advances. The hardware itself  will eventually become  ‘end of life’ and  no longer supported by the manufacturer. This adds cost as most new servers will need replacing within 3-5 years.

Instead, an increasing number of businesses are moving their servers ‘into the cloud’. This gives cost savings and advantages in rapidly deploying new servers as ‘virtual machines’ as required.

If you have an existing server (or servers), then dashing to the cloud may not be right for you just yet. First it may be better to look at your existing costs and requirements in comparison and make an informed choice.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

If your business offers and develops web based services then a cloud solution may be for you. We can guide you through the various options available and help you migrate.
